William Romaine Newbold's annotations in the margins of the pages of a published copy of Mayor's edition of Cicero's De natura deorum (Cambridge, 1880-1885), pertaining only to the Latin text of Cicero and not to the scholarly apparatus. No certain basis could be found for dating the annotations; in the context of the present collection (Ms. Coll. 856), they presumably date from no earlier than the beginning of Newbold's teaching career.

Graduate of the University of Pennsylvania in 1887, and subsequently pursued graduate work there in philosophy, earning a Ph.D. in 1891; taught at Penn from around 1892, becoming a full professor in 1903; in 1907 named the Adam Seybert Professor of Intellectual and Moral Philosophy, a position he held until his death.
